Spiritual Care for the Human-Animal Bond

AAVChap: Who We Are

The American Association of Veterinary Chaplains (AAVChap) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing veterinary chaplaincy and animal chaplaincy through compassionate, spiritually inclusive care. We support veterinary professionals, pet caregivers, and animal companions by addressing the emotional and spiritual dimensions of the human‑animal bond—especially during times of illness, loss, and transition. A veterinary chaplain offers presence, listening, and guidance when decisions feel heavy, grief feels isolating, or caregiving becomes overwhelming.

What is Veterinary Chaplaincy?

Veterinary chaplaincy is a specialized form of spiritual and emotional care that serves:

  • Individuals grieving the loss of a pet
  • Families navigating end‑of‑life decisions for an animal companion
  • Veterinary teams facing compassion fatigue, burnout, and moral stress
  • Animal care professionals across shelters, rescues, and clinical settings

Unlike therapy or clinical counseling, veterinary chaplains provide non‑judgmental, interfaith support—honoring each person’s beliefs, values, and lived experience.

Our 3 Pillar Communities: Who We Serve

Caregivers
Veterinarians, technicians, assistants, shelter workers, rescue teams, zoo professionals, and animal care staff seeking grief support, emotional resilience, and spiritual grounding.
Caretakers
Individuals and families looking for support after losing a pet, guidance through difficult medical decisions, or a compassionate space to process grief.
Animal Companions
Through presence, ritual, and advocacy, veterinary chaplaincy honors animals as sentient partners in the human‑animal relationship.

A veterinary chaplain may specialize in one or more of these communities and continue providing general support in all areas.

Why Veterinary Chaplaincy Matters

Veterinary medicine is deeply relational. Research and field experience increasingly show that emotional and spiritual care improves wellbeing for both families and veterinary professionals.
