Celebration of Life & Remembrance for Our Animal Companions

The WSU College of Veterinary Medicine's Celebration of Life & Remembrance for Our Animal Companions is a quarterly event dedicated to honoring the lives and memories of our cherished animal companions. This inclusive gathering offers a supportive space for individuals to reflect on the deep connections shared with their animal friends and to find comfort in loss with a community that values the profound bond between humans and animals. The event includes a remembrance garland ceremony, where participants can honor their companions in a tangible and meaningful way, while celebrating the love and joy their lives brought. The event welcomes all, creating a space that is both reflective and supportive for believers and non-believers alike.

Overview, importance, and examples of Spiritual Assessment tools and models for the practice of chaplaincy, and discussion for what this can and does like in a veterinary/animal setting.

Jill Sajec, has over 20 years of experience as a Spiritual Care practitioner. Jill holds a Master of Divinity with an emphasis in Ecological Spiritual Care, multiple certificates in Compassionate Listening, and successfully completed 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in 2020. In 2023, after having to euthanize her and her husband’s 16 year old dog, Jack, in an emergency veterinary clinic, she began to wonder if there were any such things as an Animal or Veterinary Chaplain…turns out there is! Jill was thrilled to find AAVChap, and is excited to be part of this growing field, and eager to learn, and help bring chaplaincy to the settings that care for the human-animal bond in all its forms.

Jill lives in Vancouver, Washington with her husband Michael, and currently serves as the Chaplain/Spiritual Care Coordinator for Shalom Hospice. In her spare time you can find Jill volunteering with the Dog Team at her local human society.
